Now is the time to show your support for the buy back and continue the momentum and good work achieved by the NT Govt on the latest buy backs and closures. The support of as many people as possible is needed to let Fisheries Minister Kon Vatskalis and the NT Government know that we support the current process of taking out commercial licences and closing areas to barramundi netting. There has been some media coverage in the past couple of weeks that is not supportive of the process and it is essential that we let the Minister know that there is strong support from recreational fishers. We are concerned that it may be more difficult to maintain Government’s support unless they can see that there is strong approval from recreational fishers for these actions.
Please tell as many friends, work mates, relatives and fisho’s you can ask them to take a few minutes to write or email Minister Vatskalis to let him know that you support the current process. All that needs to be said something along the lines of the message provided below, provided by Chris makepeace from AFANT.
It can be emailed to:
Kon.Vatskalis@nt.gov.au
or by post to:
The Hon Kon Vatskalis
Minister for Fisheries
GPO Box 3146
Darwin, NT, 0801
Dear Minister Vatskalis
I want you to know that I support the process of reallocating barramundi from the commercial industry to recreational fishers that is taking place through the commercial barramundi licence buy back and area closure processes. I also support the closures of Bynoe Harbour, the Finniss River and part of Fog Bay to commercial Barramundi fishing that the NT Government has put in place this year. I believe that the licence buy back should continue and that further barramundi resources should be allocated to recreational fishers by closing more areas to commercial netting.
Regards
Lets all get onboard and help make what is a fantastic Recreational fishery the envy of the rest of Australia and the world.
